Teaching your child how to be disciplined

As a parent you have a powerful influence to help in your job of discipline and guidance. But this is a challenging job that changes with the age of the child. The best way to describe discipline especially when referring to child is training that develops self control. By using effective parenting skills to guide your child towards self control you are preparing him for real life situations. Throughout his childhood you can help him learn this disciplinary behavior with thousands of tiny installations from daily life experiences. Most of the parents find the disciplining their children as the most difficult task of parenting. You have to find out way in which your child will develop and inner mechanism that will guide him to behave and act effectively and appropriately.
What is parent’s role as the instructor of discipline?
  •       Parents should establish some firm rules which should be clearly and briefly explained to the children.  Make less but important rules rather than making millions of them governing every little thing.
  •    It is to be understood that the parents will have to remind the children of the set rules over and over again. Also it is very natural to expect some misbehavior at each stage of development. Hence it is important to tailor your discipline approach as per your child’s developmental age.
  •       It is important that the parents express clearly to their children what will be an acceptable behavior in all sorts of daily situations.
  •   To get best and effective results you have to maintain control over yourself and your emotions. There will some testing times where you will be pushed to your limits.
  •    Your mission should be to train your child to develop self control and hence your discipline approach should be consistent to attain this goal.
  •     It is important that you recognize your child’s good behavior and appreciate it when you see it. Children many times misbehave to get attention.
  •     Daily routines play an important role in disciplining your child. Make sure you and your child follow    this routine. Getting enough sleep each night is important so that you are your best the next day.
  •     How you behave has direct impact on your child. A parent should be a good role model for their children. They should solve problems non -violently and communicate clearly.
  •    Parents should avoid spanking children as does no good and they can get afraid of adults and it also does not teach them what to do.
  •    Parents should always take responsibility for their own actions. Say what you have to say and say it clearly and then no more. Use a strong and effective way of communicating.
No children are born with discipline they have to be taught about it. Disciplining children is a broad term which includes helping them to have self control, set limits and correct misbehavior, helping them to feel good, guiding and encouraging them and the most important teaching them to think independently for themselves. By teaching them little by little they learn to control their behavior. Encouragement plays an important role in disciplining your child. Encouragement and discipline go together like peanut butter and jelly. Compliment a good behavior when you see it. Your child’s desire to please you is your biggest asset in encouraging good behavior.  Always remember disciplining does take time and practice and hence consistency and patience are two golden rules to achieve effective results.
